Equipment and technique

Here is a brief list of the camera gear I have used over the years: John Juston in Canyonlands, 2004

2009-present: Canon 5D II (21.1 megapixel) with L-series lenses

2006-2008: Canon 5D (12.7 megapixel) with L-series lenses

2003-2006: Pentax 67 ii medium format film camera, Fuji Velvia film

1996-2003: Wista 4x5 large format field camera with Rodenstock lenses

1985-1996: Nikon 35mm film camera, Kodachrome and Fuji Velvia films

Most shots were tripod mounted using Gitzo tripods and Really Right Stuff (RRS) heads. In 2008, I began shooting quite a bit using a RRS panoramic head attachment on my tripod, along with a 45mm tilt/shift lens. This setup allows for high quality digital compositing (stitching) of several shots into a single larger panorama format. Image quality can be outstanding in these shots with pixel counts in the range of 35-70 MPixels and thus posibilities for very large and totally stunning photographic prints. This is an extremely gratifying process for me, as both the image quality and rather technical setup procedure in the field remind me of my beloved old 4x5, only with the portability of 35mm gear.

All images are processed in a calibrated digital darkroom workflow. Film images were professionally scanned on high-end drum scanners. Digital images and/or files were processed using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom software.
